Rug Size Guide for Living Rooms

The most common rug mistake is buying too small. A rug that floats in the middle of a seating area, untouched by any furniture, makes a room feel smaller and less considered. Size is worth getting right before anything else.

Three ways to place a living-room rug

All legs on. The rug sits under the whole seating group, with every furniture leg resting on it. This needs a large rug and a generous room, and it feels calm and complete. Aim for at least 30–40 cm of rug visible around the furniture.

Front legs on. The most flexible option for most homes. The front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug while the back legs sit on the floor. This ties the group together without requiring the largest size.

Floating / accent. A smaller rug centred on the coffee table, with no furniture on it. This works best in compact spaces or layered over a larger natural-fibre rug.

Practical starting sizes

Living rooms vary, but these ranges cover most:

• Compact seating area: around 200 × 150 cm
• Standard living room: around 240 × 170 cm to 300 × 200 cm
• Large or open-plan room: 300 × 200 cm and upward

How to measure your room

Lay out painter’s tape on the floor in the shape and size you are considering, then live with it for a day. Walk the room. See how it sits against the sofa and the coffee table. This single step prevents almost every sizing regret.

Leave a consistent margin of bare floor between the rug and the walls — usually 20–40 cm — so the rug reads as a defined island rather than wall-to-wall carpet.

A note on shape and proportion

Match the rug’s proportions to the seating area, not the room. A long, narrow seating group suits a longer rug; a square arrangement suits a more square piece. Handmade rugs come in a wide range of proportions, so it is worth telling us the shape you need.
