Buying a Handmade Rug in Istanbul

Buy on the piece, not the pressure

A good rug seller is patient. You should feel free to look, ask questions, take photos, and leave to think. If you ever feel rushed or pressured, that is reason enough to slow down. The right piece will still be there, or another one will come.

What to ask

The same questions apply whether you are in the gallery or messaging from abroad:

• Where is it from, and how old is it, roughly?
• What is the pile and foundation made of?
• Are the dyes natural, and how confident are you?
• Are there repairs, stains, or areas of wear?
• What are the exact dimensions, in centimetres and feet?
